View Full Version : Who Are WE... Really???

Okay, as members of this forum we have introduced ourselves... told about our fave books and movies... where we are from, what we are doing, how old we are and so on... Seeing that this is general chat I think we need to have a topic for all of us... no really a discussion about any particular thing persay, but just get going and let it take off... and believe me, things around here take off in new directions every which way we turn :)
So... I guess the easiest thing to do would be list a few things that are going on in the world and see who wants to say what and just let it go from there... this is a forum full of other people... so I am going to list a few issues and someone else can be the first to run with it...
1. Pat Robertson blames Hurricane Katrina on Ellen Degeneres.
2. Hate crimes are rising across the nation, and in Europe, mostly against homosexuals.
3. There was a march on Washington to end the war in Iraq on Sept. 24... newspapers declare that 20,000 showed up, BUT in all reality there were more like 100,000.
4. We are borrowing money from China and other Asian countries to fund our war and hurricane relief efforts.
5. There is speculation that hurrucane relief was delayed because affected communities were poor and/or black communities.
Okay... now this may or may not work... someone just needs to reply to one of these, or even think of something that you know is going on and post your opinion... Let us try to talk about the world we live in in the Gen. Chat section... everything doesn't have to be about Kaysar, even if we are fans...

How could Ellen D. be blamed for a hurricane? Are homosexuals now to be blamed for natural disasters too?
I heard violent crimes in the US have actually reach an all time low since like 1970 something (i think). I heard it on the news and on my radio. They said it has drop over 50% since 93'. I think that is pretty good. I mean there are still a lot of crimes but it is good they are coming down.
I love Kanye West. All he did was say what everyone was thinking...well that is what most ppl believed in my area anyway.
1. Pat Robertson is a freak.
2. Very sad that people can't just let people be.
3. Evidence that the 'liberal media' is just a myth.
4. Very scary. Meanwhile - we give tax cuts to the rich. I hate that we have to borrow money when our citizens could do more to help shoulder the burden.
5. I believe it. Racism is still a problem in the US. Read this story about how two photos taken in New Orleans: http://www.snopes.com/katrina/photos/looters.asp.

Pat Robertson on The 700 Club claimed Ellen caused the hurricane because she as an avowed lesbian hosted the Emmy's... he also said that Sept. 11 was partially her fault because she hosted the Emmy's a few days prior to the attack... Robertson is a crazy old man...
I love that Kanye spoke up about the issue! Some thought it was wrong, BUT, they have to consider some things... for instance, there were three pictures in three different newspapers. One of a black man carrying food through flood waters, the caption said he was a looter. Another of a white woman doing the same thing, saying she found it. And the third of a white woman doctor commandeering medicine from a nearby Walgreens to administor treatment. The issue was stupid. Who really cared if any of those people took that food? The bigger issue is that they are homeless and hungry becasue of the hurricane...
(And it is HATE crimes that are on the rise not all crime :)

OK, I think it's not the government's damn business what I do in my sexual life
I think Pat Robertson is a Bigot
Hurricane Katrina was caused by the Russian and Chinese Mafia and something to do with a large magnet.

ashley sweetie there are a lot of boards with current events as the topics. Maybe starting a thread about one specific topic? Course It would most likely turn into a wwaaaaaafest and the Modalmightys would come in and shut it down.

That's just it... one specific topic turns into about 50 others... I though maybe someone would get one thing centralized so others could reply from a large group of ideas and events... I'm not the only person in the forum, so I thought someone else would like to help by providing ideas that are affecting them... If it becomes too much trouble I may just delete the thread and give up the concept...

5. There is speculation that hurrucane relief was delayed because affected communities were poor and/or black communities.
Well I believe this.....I think if it were not a poor community there would have been immediate relief.
No comment on the rest.

I think the fact that the people was black was a big issue as well... some people think otherwise, but that is something I share with others... no one can honestly say Bush would have denied part of rich, white America relief...
But I don't think dealing with disasters is a specialty of Bush's...

Ashley,
One reason I didn't partake in this is I am very upset about how the Katrina victims were mistreated and I didn't want to get in a political debate.
I also get very touchy when the African Americans don't get fair treatment.

There you go, you said what you thought, no debate started... I'm with you... The people in the affected area were mistreated, African Americans or not... I personally hate that racism is still such a big issue in a country where people think it isnt.

His brother is the governor! So of course - the people of florida would never have been in the same situation as those in New Orleans. After all - Dubya owes his brother jeb, seeing as how his state handed him the election in 2000.

Oh I didn't mean you personally. I only said Bush would have rushed help to Florida (and he should like he should with every state) because of his brother. I was only implying that he does not treat every state the same and then I feel the victims were discriminated because of socioeconomic status.

It's okay guys... like I said, Bush is not very good at managing and handling disasters... or wars for that matter...
Just out of curiosity... does anyone else think we should NOT have went to war?
I support the soldiers that are there, because I do not want them to die in a war they did not declare... however, I do not think Bush should have sent anyone over there in the first place. War is not the only option...
(I guess they'll be finding WMDs anyday now, lol)

Well, Katrina womps a city that's got a lot of poor black folks. We got substantial aid to the tsunami area faster.
Rita womps an area much better supplied with rich white people. And there were ships loaded with relief equipment following the hurricane as it moved toward the shore.
It probably doesn't have anything to do with anything that Louisiana's governor is a Democan and Texas's is a Republicrat, either.
Tweedledum and Tweedledumber, but Bonsai is doing as much to polarize the country as Maggie did to polarize the house, but it's a lot harder to change the channel or flip to another feed.
For other things to worry about, consider how Very Well the administration will manage things if the New Madrid fault zone, which shook the entire continent the last time it let go, should give the size quake it did last time it was active. (And if you live in the Mississippi River valley and are wondering "what's a New Madrid?" you best get googling! "New Madrid Fault Zone AND 1812" should do ya.)
Oh, yeah, Yosemite is a volcanic caldera and it's about due, too.
I got a bunch of 'em, but those are some of the best critters in my anxiety closet.... Enjoy!

Okay... so... the judge that is going to replace Sandra Day O'Connor is a woman...
... there is a new tv show about a woman being president - Commander in Chief - that is pretty good...
...Bush is in the works of correcting our "borken" immigration policy (which was a disaster before Sept. 11)...
Anyone thinking anything tonight???

I'm so out of the loop on the National scene that I didn't even know John Roberts is the Chief Justice. Heh.
I know he put Meyers (Is that her name? I just actually watched the news today, as I've been waaay too busy at work lately to have the time to sit and watch it) up for nomination. She worked in his administration. Boy, that gives me high hopes. *rolls eyes*.
Frankly, any person that man nominates for any position scares the crap out of me, and a lot of it is because he scares the crap out of me. Bush is too busy trying to be a standout guy that he's screwing crap up left and right along the way.
Not that I really enjoyed much of his father's term, what little I knew of it.
ashleyheartskaysar
10-04-2005, 07:00 PM
Yeah, her name is Harriet Meyers... ppl are concerned because she has NEVER been a judge.
RhyanShae
10-04-2005, 10:04 PM
While I wouldn't discount her on that alone, it makes it highly weird for me to think of her as a good nomination for that. Most judges start off as lawyers, and then move up the chain, so to speak. If she hasn't even started on that path, how do they know she will be able to judge the law and not just argue with or against it?
ashleyheartskaysar
10-04-2005, 10:14 PM
Oh, no, not at all discounting her... just saying that she's never been a judge... I don't know what to think about it. I am happy that a woman is replacing O'Connor though.
I just wish someone else that had been on the bench had become Chief Justice... not an "outsider" so to speak.

Bush is obviously stacking the court, which worries me. Not that all Presidents don't have this objective; they do. It just concerns me because his way of thinking, his fundamental, extreme conservatism sets me on edge and makes me very worried for the progress that we've achieve in the last 50 some odd years going away.
Hopefully, these judges won't lead to some serious issues being overturned (Roe V. Wade, for one), but I can't rest until it's been brought before them and decided. I just worry about any nomination Bush has made. He picks...very scary people.

He won't be in office much longer... that's what I tell myself everytime I see his face...
I am happy that Iraq is now getting its fair shot at gov't, and yes, that is partially Bush's doing, but I do not think we should have went to war... my friend calls me a hippie, but I support the soldier, not the war...

Heh, I was very divided on the war issue. I am happy we ousted Saddam. I've been waiting for that since I was a kid and the first Gulf War. But, the lies and the rush irritate me.
But then, most anti-war protesters at the beginning of the war irritated me with their non-arguments. Or, at least those posting on websites I frequented and were shown on the news. I was always delighted to see someone who could give me an argument to believe in and understand. Most just stretched or misinterpreted the truth, or believed in the malarky that a lot of people were spouting.
So, I try to avoid that discussion. It doesn't matter to me that he's leaving soon. I'm mad he's even there to begin with. And, his precedent is set in the nominees he makes, so having two Justices replaced in his term, and knowing he must agree with what they believe and interpret worries me, even beyond his "reign" in office.
