Without telling what side I am on, I need some info. The debate is Are dogs allowed at homes. I have found dogs mention 5 times in the Quran but none of them say it is bad. They are:
18:18 "You would think that they were awake, when they were in fact asleep. We turned them to the right side and the left side, while their dog stretched his arms in their midst."

18:22 "Some would say, they were three; their dog being the fourth, while others would say, Five; the sixth being their dog, as they guessed. Others said, seven, and the eighth was their dog. Say, My Lord is the best knower of their number. Therefore, do not argue with them; just go along with them. You need not consult anyone about this."

5:4 "They consult you concerning what is lawful for them; say, Lawful for you are all good things, including what trained dogs and falcons catch for you. You train them according God's teachings. You may eat what they catch for you, and mention God's name thereupon. You shall observe God. God is most efficient in reckoning."

5:16 "So they went out and departed and the young man's dog was with them." And as they return home, after all the adventure and good things that happen , in chapter: " After this Tobias went on his way, praising God because He had made his journey as success....So they went their way, and the dog went along behind them."

I read one sunnah that talked about the Prophet praying while his dogs were playing.

Could it be that this is more culture than religion? I can't find anything that says no. The more I read about the pople of the caves the more I am begaining to think it is OK.

Islamically there is no problem in keeping a guard dog on your premises. Since dogs (and pigs) are from Najes al-Ain (inherently impure) animals, you will have to make sure that they do not lick the areas which are always supposed to remain taher (purified), such as place of prayers, place where sacred things like the Holy Qor’an and sajdaghah (torbah) are kept. Also, do not eat or drink from the utensils which have been licked by the dog, unless you have cleansed it by rubbing with wet clean earth and then washing it with water. Sometimes your dog will cling to your clothes (say, pants) then such clothes should not be worn for Salat.

It is not harm to protect, take care of or to even have dogs. They are just Najes which means you have to cleanse yourself and things they come in contact with.

"And We sent water from the heavens so that We may enliven the dead earth and satiate its inhabitants (animals and men)"
(Surat al-Forqan: 48-49)

Quenching the thirst of any person, and as the tradition above indicates, even that of animals is an extremely noble deed. In fact this action is no less than giving life to a dead person.

In Islam, it is very important to be kind to Allah's creatures:

It is said that Abdollah ibn Jaafar went towards one of his friends one day, halting at a date-grove belonging to a certain tribe, where a young black slave was working. The youth brought out his lunch just as a dog was entering the garden: it came closer to the youth, who threw a loaf of bread to it.
The dog ate it and the youth threw a second, and then a third, which were both eaten as Abdollah looked on. He then said, “what do you have for lunch each day?” “As you have seen,” replied the youth.
“Why have you preferred the dog over yourself?” asked Abdollah. “This is not the dog’s territory,” the young man replied, “it has just arrived hungry from some distant place, and I disliked driving him away.”
Abdollah ibn Jaafar then said [to himself], “do I really know anything about generosity? Surely this man is more magnanimous than I.” He then bought the youth, the garden and all it contained, freed the youth from slavery and it all back to him.

Etiquette of Walking and Riding in Islam

Imam Ali (AS) said: “Walking fast takes away the believer’s brilliancy.” [Reference: al-Behar Ch.73, pp.301]
The Prophet (S) said: “Ladies must not use the middle of the road, but rather its sides.” [Reference: al-Behar Ch.73, pp.302]
The Prophet (S) said: “Do not use mosques as roads (short cuts) until you have performed a two-units prayer in them.” [Makeram al-Akhlaq]
The Prophet (S) said: “Part of a Muslim’s welfare is a comfortable means of travel.” [al-Kafi Ch.6]
Imam as-Sadeq (AS) said: “Part of a believer’s happiness is a transport means that he uses for his needs and to provide for his fellow believers’ needs.” [al-Kafi Ch.6]
The Prophet (S) said: “Horses have welfare pinned on them.” [al-Wasa’il Ch.7-Riding animals regulations]
Imam Ali (AS) said: “He who ties (has) a horse that is blond with a blaze or pure blond-preferably having a flowing blaze with a brightness in its leg-won’t have poverty strike his house as long as that horse is in it. And as long as it is in his owner’s possession, injustice does not befall his house.”(He who possesses a blond horse shall not be impoverished or wronged) [al-Wasa’il Ch.7-Riding animals regulations]
Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS) said: “the riding animal has seven rights with its owner:
He must not overload it.
He must not use its back as a seat from which he talks (to others).
He starts feeding it hen he gets off,
He must not brand it in its face,
He must not strike it on its face because it glorifies God,
Offers to let it drink when he passes by a water, he must not strike it on the … but rather on the ….., for it sees what you do not.” [al-Behar, Ch.61: pp. 202]
Imam Ali (AS) said: “The Messenger of Allah (S) said: ‘No threesome should ride a single animal for one of them would be cursed.’ (The animal should not be ridden by more than two people) [al-Kafi Ch.6 pp.541]
According to Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS): “The Messenger of Allah (S) said: ‘ Do not strike riding animals on their faces because they praise God.’ And on another occasion, he said: ‘Do not brand them on the face.’ [al-Kafi Ch.6 pp.2203]
Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS) said: "Abu Dhar, may Allah be pleased with him was seen watering a donkey in ar-Rabthah (his place of exile-outside Medina), and some people asked him if he had someone to spare him the trouble. He said: ‘ I heard the Messenger of Allah (S) say: ‘No animal but it asks Allah on every morning; O Allah, grant me a righteous owner who gives me enough fodder, waters me and does not overwork me.’ This is why I like to water it myself.” [al-Kafi Ch.6 pp.537]
The Prophet (S) said: “When an animal stumbles and its rider says:’ May you perish! It would reply: ‘May the more disobedient of us to the Lord, perish! [al-Kafi Ch.6 pp.538]
The Prophet (S) said: “Do not sit on riding animals for a long time; do not use their backs as seats.”
The women’s riding on saddles is mentioned in many credible Traditions as one of the sings of the end of time.
According to Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS): “Saddling is an abominable way of transport for women.” [al-Kafi Ch.6 pp.541]
According to Imam Mohammad al-Baqer (AS); “It is not permissible for a lady to saddle except in case of necessity or when traveling.” [al-Behar Ch.73 pp.300]
According to Imam ar-Redha (AS): “There is a Satan on each riding animal’s nostril, so when one of you wants to bridle it, let him pronounce the name of Almighty Allah.” [al-Kafi Ch.61 pp.209]
Many sayings from the Tradition strongly advise against traveling alone. [al-Behar Ch.73]
The Prophet (S) said: “No two people travel together but he kinder between them to his companion would have the greater reward and be dearer to Allah than the other.” [al-Behar Ch.73 pp.268]
The Prophet (S) said: “the most preferable company to Allah is the foursome; and no more than seven people (travel together) but their noise will rise.” [al-Behar Ch.73]
According to ibn Omair: ‘ Imam as-Sadeq (AS) disliked it for a man to companion someone who could spend on him, and that he (AS) said: “Travel with (in the company of) your equal.” [al-Behar Ch.73]
Imam Mohammad al-Baqer (AS) said: “When you intend to travel do it with your like; and do not companion someone who meets all your demands, because that humbles the believer.” [al-Behar Ch.73]
According to Abu Basir: “I said to Imam as-Sadeq (AS) (What do you say about) A man who sets out with well-to-do people and he is the least prosperous among them, and they expend while he cannot do the same? He said: ‘ I do not like him to humble himself; let him set out with his equal.’ [al-Behar Ch.73]
The Prophet (S) said: “When one of you sets out on a journey and he comes back to is family, let him present them with a new thing, even a rock.” [al-Behar Ch.73]
Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS) said: “He who hugs a dust-covered pilgrim (who has just arrived from his journey) is as if he has touched the black stone (of the Kaabah); and when a man comes back to his house from his travel, he mustn’t attend to anything until he has washed himself, performed a two-unit prayer and prostrated and thanked Allah a hundred times.”

In so far as dogs being inside a house, as long as they are not coming in contact with places where prayers are performed or places where the Qu'ran is kept, it is fine.

Additionally, if the 'owner' of the dog comes in contact with the dog, they will need to perform ablution before offering their next prayer or coming in contact with the Qu'ran.

You will find that the vast majority of households where the people are observant Muslims, that dogs are restricted from being inside the house. I have, however, met a relgious family who does allow their little lap dog in the house at all times - they have devised a way to prevent the dog from entering their designated prayer room.
