What is your family history. I am from Kentucky born and raised. My dads side is mainly from Germany learned how to speak german, He has a little tiny bit of french in him. My moms side is mainly Scottish and Irish, english and german. Everyone thinks its weird she has red hair and brown eyes instead of green. My dad has Brown hair and brown eyes. My brother has red hair and brown eyes and i have blonde hair and hazel green eyes. I look german I think. Some people think I look more Irish. Prob cause im so pale. ;)

My father was Scottish born in Edinburgh. My mother's family is from the British Isles. Irish Welsh. So...I've red hair, pale skin, and blue eyes. No chance for anything else. Mom's family all have brown hair and eyes though...odd ugh?

I'm German and Italian. My dad was all German, didn't ever really know his side of the family though, because he left before I was born.
My mom was the first daughter of a first generation Italian man and German woman. They married because they were two of the few Catholics where they grew up. I grew up both in Chicago and in Berlin, Germany (grades 7-9 when I was rebelling and lived with relatives over there).
I'm now in love with an Iranian/Saudi Arabian Muslim and will be diluting the family tree even more :)

Hmm, I was born in Los Angeles..as were my parents. My father's mother is from Germany (there's a bit of Italilan in there as well..a small bit).. His father was in the military and grew up in the chicago area. His ancestors were originally from france, by way of canada (yes...the dreaded frech-canadian am I...somewhat) with some Irish tossed in at some point..
My moms parents were transplants from other areas of the country. My moms mom is primarily Scottish and English. She grew up on a farm in Michigan (I know they had cherry orchards as well). Her father has quite a bit of Irish as well as Native American (Choctaw mostly, but a small amount of Cherokee). He was a farmboy from Oklahoma who jumped onto a freight train with seven dollars in his sock and made his way to California in the forties. He at first went to work doing construction for movie sets in Hollywood, but that was before my mom was born in 1955 (she is the youngest of five daughters).
I guess I'm somewhat of a mutt. I grew up in Redondo Beach, which is in Los Angeles, and moved up here to San Jose when I was 25. I've been here for five years now. My fiance is from the Crystal Lake area in Illinois and we constantly flip flop on where we want to live long term.
I have been told physically that I look like I'm German. I have medium dark hair and green eyes.

err....i'm french and moroccan. apparently my ancestors were scandanavian or something. i was born with blonde hair (i dye it reddish brown-but i have brown eyes). lots of people in my family are redheads and have green eyes. i am definitely one of the palest people in my family, aside from a few norwegian cousins.

There seems to be a lot of people who are German and irish. Thats cool. I think its important to learn what you can about your history. It fun to learn new things about your family youve never heard before.

I was a very very heavy drinker in my early twenties (hey, anyone married to my ex-husband would have been!). I really started to change the way I drink a few years ago, and these days I don't drink very often at all. When I do drink at home, I drink champagne, lol. Alcoholism runs on my dads side of the family. He's been in AA for 22 years now though.

22yrs, well good for him for acknowledging he has a problem. A lot dont. My self I drank too much and had alch poisoning. I learned my lesson. I dont touch it at all now. Plus the people I know who drank either were really annoying drunks, crying all the time, or violent so I stay away now.

Aside from German and Irish blood, I also have Native American in me! Really, when I do drink, I have to stick to beer, wine and champagne..when I drink hard liquor I'm likely to have a black out, so I really have to watch it.

My family tree is a little complex in that our home land disappeared ages ago. So here is my shot at it:
I was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and my brother was born in Scarborough, Ontario. My father was born in Syria and my mother was born in Jordan - they met in Canada. However, my father isn't Syrian and my mother isn't Jordanian. TECHNICALLY they are both Syrian/Aramaic (as in Suryoyo). Our homeland should have been Mesopotamia. Our current homeland can be traced to Antioch.

I'm Irish on one side of the family and german on the other also...also not a big drinker!
From my mom's side: Great grandmother was of Cherokee Indian heritage...which is really cool! She was a very beautiful woman.
My dad's side: Family roots derived from Liverpool/Blackpool area in the U.K. My aunt has actually traced lots of people on her travels to England...found out my great great great uncle was actually mayor of Blackpool! All my life I've always wanted to travel to England and visit all those areas...it's a beautiful place from all the photos I've seen. Old castles fascinate the hell out of me.

Born and raised in Iowa. My family is a mutt mix. My paternal grandmother is half Cherokee Indian. My maternal great-great grandfather was born into slavery during the civil war. And my paternal grandfather was descended from an Irish knight....

My parents are from Northern Ireland. They moved to Canada in 1977 (I was born in 1978). They came here because of all the fighting that was going on over there. All of my relatives are over there except for a few who moved over to England or Australia. I've been over to Northern Ireland twice to visit family.

I was born and raised and still live in Philadelphia (E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!) I lived in Texas for 2 years as a kid and in Germany (Berlin) for a year as a kid (my biological dad is in the army). I'm african american but my mom's grandmom was an Irish immigrant with curly red hair and green eyes. Her husband was Navajo and they had 14 BEAUTIFUL Irish/Navajo children, my grandmother being the 11th.

My husband, from best we can tell, is full blood German. His mother's line and his father's can be traced to Germany 1600's. First ones here came in the 1750's to Philadelphia.
My father is of English, Scottish, Black Dutch, and Native American (Choctaw) descent; the English line going back to the 1600's.
My mother is of French, English, Irish, and German.

Ah, genealogy. My favorite thing.
My ancestry is pure "American." I have one more recent (1840s) German ancestor, but other than that they mostly all got here in the 1600s. Before that, they came from the British Isles (Scotland, England, Ireland, and Wales), with just a couple of early German and Dutch folks thrown in.
Winter80-sara
10-14-2005, 06:52 PM
Does anyone think genealogy is important to pass down to your children?
Tickles
10-14-2005, 09:46 PM
Absolutely! Genealogy is terribly important to pass on to the next generation. I could wax rhapsodic about the great things knowing your genealogy can do for you. Here are a few of my first thoughts:
1. Pure, simple genetics. Knowing what medical conditions your ancestors had, what they died of is invaluable in this day and age, when preventative measures can be taken.
2. Knowing that each and every one of your ancestors, from the governor to the town drunk was equally important, and vital to your existence on the earth. It makes me much more tolerant of people, and their foibles.
3. It puts a very real face on history. Especially for children. To know that your great-great-grandmother went west over the Oregon Trail or was put on an immigrant ship to the "new world" makes those events so much more than facts in a history book.
4. After doing enough research, it gives you the knowledge that we are all of us (barring very recent immigrants) related to one another. And should treat one another that way.
Some of the above applies to biological children, and for the genetic reasons it's important to know one's biological ancestry. But adopted children need to know both ancestries. You learn your traditions from the family who raised you, while you get your genetic makeup from the family who passed it on. Both are equally important.
Sorry for the impromptu lecture ... but as I said, it's my favorite thing!

yeah i would love to know my family from way back.
Winter,
Here are five websights to start with. There are lots more.
http://usgenweb.com/
http://genforum.com/
http://rootsweb.com/
http://ancestry.com/
http://www.familysearch.org/
Usgenweb has a lot of info in there about getting started. Genforum and rootsweb have posts of people looking for certain info. Ancestry is a pay sight.
Family search is the Mormon's LDS History Center. I've found them most helpful.
Happy hunting.
